Objectives: This module is designed to explore the main schools of what is known as “literary theory” or “critical theory”. Each literary theory is based on certain assumptions or philosophical principles that together design the methodology, manual, or technique that leads to different interpretations of a literary text. We will deal with the most important literary theories used for interpretation and criticism. In addition to that, we will deal with their principles and assumptions, which will be analyzed and then applied to discuss and analyze various selected texts, in an attempt to exemplify and explain the “how to”, or the techniques used to formulate the different interpretations of particular texts. The final objective will be to reinforce and stimulate the students’ analytical ability.
